Frequently Asked Questions
Who Is Divine Science For?Is Divine Science a religion, or something else?
It can be either, depending on what you need. Divine Science is a spiritual philosophy and practice, not a fixed set of religious rules. Many people study it as a personal, spiritual-but-not-religious path; others practice it within a church community. There's no requirement to "convert" from anything — it's meant to deepen whatever faith or worldview you already bring.
Can I keep my own beliefs from another faith or background?
Yes, absolutely. Divine Science was built to be additive rather than exclusive. Many students bring backgrounds in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, or no tradition at all, and find the teachings complement rather than compete with what they already hold true. Spiritual truth tends to be unfolded in all non-judgmental spiritual belief systems. The only requirement here, is that you resist the notion that there's only one right way to practice spirituality.
What if I'm not sure I believe in "God" in a traditional sense?
That's completely welcome here. Divine Science speaks of "God" as Universal Presence, Love, Mind, or Spirit — language meant to point toward something larger than any one image, name or definition. You're free to use whatever words feel authentic to you, or simply sit with the idea of interconnected goodness without needing a name for it. Spiritual life is meant to be inclusive of everyone. We believe the Divine (whatever you call it) is an open door, not a wall to climb over.
Do I have to believe in specific doctrines or creeds?
No. Unlike many traditional religions, Divine Science intentionally has no required creed, doctrine, or dogma. However it does abide by a solid core teaching, based on a loving, ever-present Divine Presence that can be found at the core of most of the world's religions, and also lives within and around all of us. This teaching is offered as a lens for living, not a checklist of beliefs you must accept. While Divine Science has a strong and well-established philosophy of spiritual knowledge anyone can follow, you're invited to test these ideas against your own experience and take what resonates.
Is there a "right" way to practice this spirituality?
Not really — that's kind of the point. Divine Science trusts that each person's spiritual unfolding looks different, and there's no single "correct" pace, ritual, or formula for a successful spiritual life. Some people pray daily; others meditate, journal, or simply try to live with more awareness. We're just here to guide and support you so you don't have to "reinvent the wheel." What matters most is sincerity, not uniformity. Our purpose is to facilitate your own personal spiritual journey.
How do I get started without making a big commitment?
Gently, and on your own terms. You can request free Daily Lessons by email, explore free literature online, or simply read a book from the recommended list — no membership or formal study required. Many people explore quietly at their own pace before ever deciding whether deeper involvement is right for them.
